Tunisia opts for humanitarian and impartial approach in dealing with migrants, says Bouzghaya

"Tunisia has opted for a humanitarian and impartial approach in dealing with migrants and has provided assistance, rescue and relief services, said Faker Bouzghaya, Spokesperson for the Interior Ministry. Speaking on Friday at the International Symposium on "Immigration Issues in the Mediterranean: Media Coverage and Approaches" organised by the TAP news agency, the official pointed out that the interior ministry is keen to uphold human rights and maintain national security, and has repeatedly expressed its rejection of the instrumentalisation of migration issues. Tunisia has been the subject of false accusations regarding its treatment of migrants, he said. Bouzghaya went on to say that media coverage of migration issues must be neutral, reliable and balanced, as some of the information disseminated by foreign media on the subject was false and unfounded. Freedom of the press is guaranteed in accordance with the law, especially with regard to the rights of women and children, he stressed. The Ministry o f Interior attaches great importance to security information through comprehensive coverage of security-related news and is working to diversify its channels of communication with the national media on the one hand and the general public on the other, the official added. He said he Ministry's Communications Office ensures continuous coordination with all stakeholders in order to inform and raise awareness among the general public.
