Workers’ Party calls for release of those arrested under Decree-Law 54

Tunis: The Workers' Party called for the release of 'political prisoners, journalists, lawyers, bloggers and citizens detained under Decree-Law 54,' demanding that the proceedings against them be brought to an end. It also called for the guarantee of a fair trial for anyone who has actually committed a crime against the country or the people, far from any form of trial to settle scores. In a statement issued on Thursday to mark the 67th anniversary of Republic Day, the party called for Decree-Law No. 54 to be annulled and for freedom of information, the independence of the judiciary and freedom of trade union activity to be upheld. The workers' party denounced in another connection, the fact that presidential candidates in detention are not allowed to obtain an endorsement form, arguing that this is an infringement of their political and civil rights as citizens.
