The African Union (AU) has taken a key step toward realizing the benefits of migration by validating a comprehensive action plan to implement the Global Compact for Migration (GCM). The action plan focuses on improving migration governance and policy frameworks, protecting migrants' rights and vulnerabilities, harnessing economic benefits, and addressing the core causes of migration. 'We are committed to ensuring that migration becomes a positive force for development, benefiting both migrants and host communities,' Mrs. Doreen Annan, Acting Chief Director of the Ministry of the Interior said in Accra. She was speaking at the two-day meeting which brought together senior officials from AU Member States to finalise the continent's strategy for managing migration The meeting emphasised the importance of international cooperation, partnership, and information sharing in achieving the GCM objectives. Mrs. Annan said the validation of the action plan was a major milestone in the AU's efforts to address compl ex migration dynamics in Africa. She said the progress report from the meeting would inform the second International Migration Review Forum in Addis Ababa, scheduled for October this year. With the validation of the action plan, the AU has taken a major step towards ensuring that migration becomes a positive force for development in Africa.
