Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad Nabil Ammar warned against the risk of rising global poverty and deeper development discrepancies between countries of the North and the South as he attended the G-77 plus China Third South Summit 2024 in Kampala, Uganda, on the theme "Leaving No One Behind". Developed countries need to be aware this development gap does not serve their purposes, considering their overlapping interests and interconnected destiny, he said. There is need to pool efforts "to preserve and promote the gains of development in developing countries and support their resilience within the framework of international solidarity, the common but differentiated responsibilitie and mutual benefits" using new cooperation mechanisms, the ministry Monday said in a press release. The goal of this summit, a reflection of the 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development, is still unattainable, given the "successive crises" as well as "development financing challenges, increased debt burden , the repercussions of climate change and geostrategic divisions." Nabil Ammar also "called for accelerating the reform of the international financial system" in a bid to make sure it is fairer, efficient and more representative of countries of the South. He called for finding sustainable solutions for the debt crisis, such as converting them into development projects, overcoming obstacles to facilitate the recovery of stolen assets of peoples and delivering climate funding promises to support climate resilience endeavours. Additionally, the minister laid emphasis on the need to speed up technology transfer to developing countries. This is the least developing countries can do in exchange of making the most of trained free-of-charge workforce. Leaving No One Behind requires not to ignore the rights of the Palestinian people to freedom, dignity and life. The international community faces the obligation, under the moral and legal responsibility, to pool and intensify efforts so as to put an end to bloodshe d and colonialism and support the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people to freedom, independence and a decent life on their territory.
