Gaza UN Resolution: Tunisia outlines motives behind abstention

Tunisia abstained from casting a vote in a UN resolution calling for an "immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce" in Gaza. "This serious and unprecedented situation" in the Gaza Strip - the result of the brutal Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, requires a "clearer position" than the one spelled out in the resolution, Permanent Representative of Tunisia to the United Nations Tarek Ladeb said. Ladeb told the UN General Assembly the resolution failed to denounce war crimes and the genocide committed by occupation forces against Palestinians. The draft resolution calls for easing the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza but does not demand a ceasefire and puts the victim and the assailant on the same scale, he said. Tunisia abstained from voting in keeping with its position of principle which fully condemns atrocities committed by the Zionist entity against the Palestinian people. Tunisia keeps on providing unfailing and principled support to the Palestinian people to recover their legitimate rights, Ladeb said. He also called for compliance with UN resolutions demanding a halt to Israeli aggressions against Palestine. The UN adopted the resolution by a vote of 120-14 with 45 abstentions.
