The German embassy in Tunis forcefully denounced Tuesday's attack near el Ghriba synagogue in Djerba. "The Djerba attack fills us with horror and deep sadness; we condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms," reads a press release. Embassy staff and Ambassador Peter Prgel offer deep condolences to the families of victims among Jewish pilgrims and Tunisian police. "El Ghriba Synagogue and the annual pilgrimage are strong pillars of Jewish life in Tunisia," the embassy said, and "we are committed to protecting Jewish life and combating antisemitism and any form of discrimination in the world." The embassy also expressed the hope to see Tunisian authorities provide clarifications. The assailant is a coast guardsman in Aghir Djerba who murdered his colleague with his own weapon and took ammunition," the Interior Ministry said in a press release.He then attempted to gain access to the vicinity of el Ghriba synagogue and randomly fired at units stationed there. They fired back and prevented him from getting into the synagogue before shooting him down. Four law enforcement members and as many civilians were also wounded. "Investigations are underway to disclose motives behind this cowardly attack," the ministry added.
