Pistachio production in Gafsa estimated at 2,800 tonnes

The pistachio harvesting season is set to commence in mid-August in Gafsa governorate, with an estimated production of 2,800 tonnes, marking a rise of approximately 400 tonnes compared to the previous season, representing a 15% increase. Head of the vegetable production department at the Local Agricultural Development Commission (CRDA) Abdessatar Ghabtan told TAP on Wednesday that the region's farmers will begin pistachio harvesting in about three weeks. He highlighted that Gafsa accounts for half of the nation's pistachio production. Pistachio plantations in Gafsa cover an area of 20,000 hectares, comprising 57% of the national allocated land for pistachio fruit, which extends over 33,000 hectares. Ghabtan attributed the rise in pistachio production in the Gafsa governorate to the initiation of new pistachio plantations. He noted that the region's farmers are eager to pursue such plantations due to the favourable climate and soil conditions, both conducive to this type of fruit.
