Sixteen Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign gets underway

Minister of Family, Women, Children and the Elderly Amel Belhaj Moussa Saturday announced in Tunis the launch of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign. The campaign kicks off each year on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day. Belhaj Moussa told a press conference the campaign, organised by the ministry, is held under the motto" Multidimensional Support and Economic Empowerment to fight against Violence." The campaign demonstrates the interest which Tunisia takes in beefing up measures aimed to help women tackle all forms of violence. A scientific event will be held to present "gender-based violence indicators," Belhaj Moussa said, as well as a study day on the "Institution of Marriage in Tunisia...Means of Support and Protection." The national report of regional coordination committees in charge of fighting violence against women will be presented at a seminar, in addition to handing over n otifications of approval to join Samida programme for the economic empowerment of women victims or at risk of violence. An event will be held at the close of the campaign by the Ministry of Women, Family, Children and the Elderly and the Interior Ministry at Habib Bourguiba avenue. The inauguration of a new domestic violence centre is likewise on the agenda. Mobile phone text messaging will be used to raise awareness about this issue and a documentary will be shown. The main findings of the fifth national report on fighting violence against women in Tunisia were outlined. A series of recommendations were issued, mainly more training programmes and awarenss-raising campaigns on law n° 58 of 2017, mechanisms to support victims and the involvement of youth in action to raise awareness about the fallouts from gender-based violence.
