World Day for Safety and Health at Work: creation of occupational safety council announced

The Social Affairs Ministry announced the creation of a national occupational safety and health council.

The council brings together all stakeholders (ministries, agencies, employer and labour organisations) under the ILO Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention (C187), Minister Malek Zahi said in an address as Tunisia is observing Friday World Day for Safety and Health at Work.

This is an appropriate framework designed to define national policies, guidelines and priorities as well as reforms in connection to occupational health and safety, Zahi added. This in addition to developing and appraising programmes and suggesting relevant periodic researches and studies.

World Day for Safety and Health at Work is placed this year under the theme "a Safe and Healthy Working Environment is a Fundamental Principle and Right at Work" in a bid to promote the new fundamental right which was recognised at the 110th International Labour Conference (June 2022).

Efforts are underway to foster decent working conditions by providing a safe and healthy working environment, the minister further said.

Tunisia ratified C187; it intends to ratify the Occupational Safety and Health Convention (No. 155) and the Occupational Health Services Convention (No. 161) as part of commitment to defend fundamental rights at work and in compliance with international legislation.
